Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer visited St Michael’s Junior School in Twerton, Bath today.

Alongside Labour’s West of England Mayor candidate Helen Godwin, Sir Keir used the visit to launch the Party’s free breakfast clubs.

The policy – a key general election manifesto pledge – provides a morning meal and 30mins of childcare to all pupils in a school, at zero cost to parents. St Michael’s has been chosen as one of 750 schools to pilot the scheme, ahead of it being rolled out to all schools across the UK.

Speaking during his visit, the Prime Minister said that “parents will no longer be hamstrung by rigid school hours and have the breathing space they need to beat the morning rush, attend work meetings and doctors’ appointments, or run errands. And crucially, it means better life chances for children.” He added “We’re going further and faster to deliver the change working families deserve. That’s the change this Government was elected to deliver.”

Bath Labour’s community representative in Twerton David Lee said: “a lot of people in this part of Bath feel they don’t get the same attention from politicians that other bits of the city or country do. To have the actual Prime Minister in our community, meeting local people, is fantastic.”
